Our take on Heartbreak High: A Break-Up Simulator
The quick arcade framing understates the pressure created by the 40-minute school-day limit. Free Play removes failure but stops before the final level, so it is not a complete substitute for the main challenge.
What is Heartbreak High: A Break-Up Simulator?
Heartbreak High is an arcade-style visual novel and dating simulator about ending relationships rather than starting them.
The player must break up with more than 15 classmates before the 40-minute school day ends. Each breakup has a branching story path, and choices may require restraint, sympathy, tact, or a firmer approach. Surprises and obstacles add further complications. A single playthrough takes 20–40 minutes, while repeated runs allow different choices.
The game includes mini-games, hand-drawn artwork across much of the screen, and an original soundtrack by Ronnie Dezsi. Free Play removes the possibility of losing but cannot reach the final level. The game also includes a possible choice not to break up, presented as a route that may produce a different ending.
