Our take on Heads Will Roll
Its survival focus trades immediate accessibility for layered decision-making. Fatigue, injuries, weapon familiarity, supplies, crafting, and relationships all compete for attention, making the medieval soldier experience more involved but less suited to players seeking a simple combat-led RPG.
What is Heads Will Roll?
Play as an ordinary medieval foot soldier during the Hundred Years War between England and France.
Survival depends on turn-based battles and decisions made outside combat. Combat considers character attributes, weapon familiarity, weapon reach, fatigue, injuries, and other conditions. More than 150 items include weapons, armor, trinkets, poisons, medical supplies, and crafting materials. Supplies can be combined into medical goods, utility items, and crossbow ammunition. Nonlinear events respond to actions and alter relationships with non-player characters. Randomized starting equipment, enemies, choices, and events create different playthroughs. Dozens of weapons have distinct movesets tied to different statistics and skills. Relationships with several characters form another part of the campaign.

Heads Will Roll compared to similar games
Back to the Dawn is also an RPG built around survival, investigation, and escape, but places its story in a maximum-security prison rather than the Hundred Years War. Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition centers on an unconventional story, characters, and exploration, while this game emphasizes survival mechanics, weapon variables, crafting, and randomized playthroughs.
