Our take on Hatch
Rather than using climbing as one element within a broader adventure, Hatch makes the ascent itself the central structure. Its first-person viewpoint, angled-wall movement, severe difficulty, and short running time replace the longer exploration and puzzle framework often associated with climbing games.
What is Hatch?
Hatch is a first-person climbing game presented in a PS1- and N64-inspired style.
Movement uses WASD, while the mouse controls the view, Space jumps, and Shift enables walking. Angled walls can be climbed by walking or jumping onto them, with R returning the player to the latest checkpoint. The game places emphasis on atmosphere, careful movement, and the changing views encountered during the ascent. Its challenge is intentionally severe, and the estimated play time is 30–60 minutes or longer. Esc pauses the game.
How Hatch plays
- 01Angled-wall climbing
- Players gain height by walking or jumping onto sloped surfaces.
- 02Checkpoint respawning
- Pressing R returns the character to the most recent checkpoint.
- 03Retro visual style
- The presentation draws from the visual style associated with the PS1 and N64.
- 04Short ascent
- The estimated completion time is 30–60 minutes, with longer sessions possible.
Hatch compared to similar games
Hatch focuses on a short, highly challenging first-person ascent using angled-wall movement and checkpoint respawning. Jusant presents climbing as an action-puzzle journey with multiple routes, climbing tools, stamina management, exploration, and secrets from a past civilization.
