Our take on Guardian of Lore
Rather than treating levels as fixed stages, the game ties their endings and displayed worlds to the amount of story detail recovered. Its platforming structure is framed as a series of folktales, with knowledge acting as the upgrade currency and spell choices shaping traversal and combat.
What is Guardian of Lore?
Guardian of Lore follows Prince Sayri through a mystical library of folktales from lost civilizations.
Each book becomes a 2. 5D level where Sayri runs, jumps, fights monsters, and faces bosses while protecting the story from an invading force. Spell casting and combat let players choose weapons and magic to shape Sayri’s approach. Knowledge collected within levels serves as a currency for improving abilities, magic, and items. Recovering different amounts of story detail changes each level, including its ending and visual world. The game draws on Native American and wider Latin American-inspired settings, characters, and mythologies, with each level revealing pieces of the tale being preserved.
How Guardian of Lore plays
- 01Spell-Based Combat
- Magic and weapons can be selected to shape how Sayri traverses levels and fights enemies.
- 02Knowledge Upgrades
- Knowledge found throughout levels can purchase stronger spells and additional items.
- 03Branching Story Levels
- The amount of recovered story information changes a level’s ending and its displayed world.
- 04Folktale Settings
- Levels draw on Native American and Latin American-inspired characters, art, and mythologies.
- 05Boss Encounters
- Monsters, magical hazards, and bosses guard the story fragments within each folktale.
