Our take on Goldenheart
Its defining structure is exploration without a map or quest log, requiring observation of the environment to determine where to go and how to proceed.
What is Goldenheart?
Goldenheart is an old-school fantasy action-adventure RPG set in Tuldenorrea, a foreign land shaped by opposing magical forces.
Playing as an outsider, the player investigates an otherworldly mystery while learning the region’s ancient lore. Exploration and observation guide navigation because the game provides neither a map nor a quest log. Environmental puzzles sit alongside real-time combat using targeting, dodging, and a shield. Encounters include dozens of distinct enemies, while stamina and quiver capacity add resource constraints. Gear becomes better over the course of the adventure, but there are no experience points or character levels. The game includes three combat difficulty settings and recommends an Xbox controller, though it is not required.
How Goldenheart plays
- 01Mapless exploration
- Progress through the world by observing surroundings rather than following a map or quest log.
- 02Real-time combat
- Fights combine target selection, evasive movement, and shield use against dozens of distinct enemy types.
- 03Resource management
- Combat and exploration require attention to stamina and the number of arrows available.
- 04Gear progression
- Equipment becomes better over the course of the adventure without experience points or character levels.
- 05Combat settings
- Three difficulty options adjust the fighting experience.
Goldenheart compared to similar games
Goldenheart combines environmental puzzles, real-time combat, and mapless exploration, while Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition centers on an unconventional story and exploration in a strange, dangerous city. Ghost of a Tale focuses on stealth, disguises, conversations, and exploration in a medieval world populated by animals. Back to the Dawn uses investigation, survival, and prison escape within a maximum-security facility.
