Our take on Godless
The broad promise of endless strategies and hundreds of items centers on a focused loop: randomized shrine-defense battles, between-fight upgrades, and permanent progress after each run. The listing gives less emphasis to that repeated run structure than to its large range of possible builds.
What is Godless?
Godless is a turn-based tactical roguelike about defending a shrine as the last surviving god.
Each run uses randomly generated battles where resources support summons, spells, and terrain changes. Summoned units can attack, strengthen allies, or heal automatically, while spells can resurrect, enchant, or poison targets. Hex-based maps can be altered with tiles that boost, block, or teleport units. Between battles, choose routes and upgrades to assemble a build for the next encounter. The game includes hundreds of items divided across four elemental classes, creating different combinations during each run. Completing runs also grants permanent upgrades, with the stated long-term objective of destroying ten continents and determining the world’s fate.
How Godless plays
- 01Terrain manipulation
- Map tiles can increase strength, obstruct movement, or teleport units during battles.
- 02Summons and spells
- Units can attack, improve allies, or heal automatically, while spells can revive, enchant, or poison targets.
- 03Randomized battles
- Each run presents battles generated with different challenges and opportunities.
- 04Build progression
- Between encounters, route choices, upgrades, and items from four elemental groups shape the next battle.
- 05Permanent upgrades
- Runs award lasting improvements, and the stated objective is to destroy ten continents.
Godless compared to similar games
Godless combines turn-based shrine defense with summons, spells, terrain alteration, and run-based item builds. Shogun Showdown also uses turn-based roguelike progression, but its description centers on attack tiles, combos, skills, and deck construction rather than Godless’s hex-map manipulation and summoned units.
