Our take on Gambonanza
Rather than treating chess as a fixed contest centered on checkmate, Gambonanza turns its rules into adjustable run components. The objective shifts to clearing every opposing piece, while Gambits, reserve units, and board changes replace the standard opening-to-endgame structure.
What is Gambonanza?
Gambonanza places chess pieces on small boards and changes the objective: runs require capturing every opposing piece rather than only the king.
Players spend money on rule-changing Gambits, board tiles, and pieces, then combine them to create unusual tactical interactions. More than 150 Gambits modify runs and piece properties. A reserve system stores additional pieces away from the board for later deployment. Tile upgrades can trap enemies, create gold-producing pieces, or add other effects. Rounds use compact boards, while wasted moves cause the board to crumble. Runs also include challenges based on pachinko, slot machines, and Gachapon, plus boss encounters. The presentation uses pixel art with a CRT filter.

- 04Mini-Game Challenges
- Pachinko-, slot machine-, and Gachapon-inspired activities provide upgrades.
- 05Boss Encounters
- Runs include battles against a roster of bosses.
Gambonanza compared to similar games
Gambonanza uses chess pieces, altered rules, board upgrades, reserve deployment, and boss encounters in a tactical roguelike structure. RACCOIN: Coin Pusher Roguelike instead combines arcade coin-pushing with deckbuilding, using special coins and items to create synergies. Both focus on run-based combinations, but their core play spaces are a chessboard and a coin-pusher machine.
