Our take on Fabular: Once Upon a Spacetime
The game gives up forgiveness in favor of difficult, repeatable runs. Frequent deaths, scarce resources, and decisions that can end a run make preparation central to play, leaving less room for a relaxed adventure or low-pressure combat.
What is Fabular: Once Upon a Spacetime?
Fabular: Once Upon a Spacetime is a physics-based roguelike set in a techno-fantasy vision of the Middle Ages, where knights clash in armored spaceships.
As the last remaining royal, the player undertakes a dangerous quest while the kingdom faces destruction. Combat combines top-down tactical physics with close-range sword duels. A procedurally generated universe contains scarce resources, rival ships, loot, and decisions with potentially fatal consequences. Defeated enemies provide gear, while weapons, shields, equipment, and the vessel can be upgraded. After each defeat, the player returns to the throne room and unlocks new boons for future runs. The journey also expands the court through encounters with new faces and old friends. Pixel art and hand-drawn illustrations present the story.
