Our take on Egyptian Senet
Senet departs from familiar modern board-game framing by treating the match as an afterlife passage through an Egyptian underworld. Its 30-space route, casting sticks, hieroglyphic spaces, and invisible opponent replace the more common contemporary chess or checkers presentation with ritual symbolism.
What is Egyptian Senet?
Play Senet as an afterlife journey through an Egyptian tomb, facing an invisible adversary while moving pawns across a 30-square board.
The route runs through three rows of 10 spaces, changing direction at the end of each row before leaving the board. Five special spaces have individual rules and hieroglyphs, including the Houses of Rebirth, Beauty, Water, the Three Truths, the Two Truths, and Horus. The game uses rules developed by Timothy Kendall in 1978. Casting sticks determine play, with the spacebar available as an alternative to mouse clicking. Ancient temple photographs, an animated stone board, piece sounds, ritual music, and a tomb-like setting accompany the match.
How Egyptian Senet plays

- 03Casting Stick Controls
- The spacebar can be used instead of a mouse click to cast the sticks.
