Our take on Dig Night
Rather than treating ghosts only as obstacles, the game makes their inner lives explorable puzzle spaces. It also gives cigarettes and sleep roles in saving and recovery, replacing more familiar RPG routines with setting-specific actions.
What is Dig Night?
Dig Night is a dark comedy RPG set in a city where Schizosoma turns people into ghosts and professional sweepers remove the remains.
Ricardo, a washed-up temporary cleaner, takes this work for pay. Exploration reveals the lives of individual ghosts, while puzzles lead into their inner worlds. The game uses pixel art, classic background music, and a retro RPG Maker VX Ace presentation. Its systems alter familiar RPG routines: tobacco or dead cigarettes are used to save, and sleeping restores energy when it is low. Movement, menus, dashing, fullscreen, and title-screen controls are assigned to keyboard keys.
How Dig Night plays
- 01Ghost Inner Worlds
- Puzzles open surreal mental spaces that reveal details about each ghost’s past.
- 02Cigarette Saving
- Tobacco or dead cigarettes serve as the items used to save progress.
- 03Sleep Recovery
- Sleeping restores energy when it is low.
- 04Retro Presentation
- Pixel visuals and classic background music frame the dark setting.
Dig Night compared to similar games
Dig Night and Angels of Death are both RPG Maker titles, but Dig Night centers on ghost cleanup, surreal exploration, and puzzles inside mental realms, while the available description for Angels of Death does not establish those systems. Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition focuses on an unconventional story and exploration of a strange city, while Back to the Dawn centers on prison escape, crime, investigation, and survival rather than ghost investigation.
