Our take on Congo Merc
Congo Merc treats withdrawal as part of the mission rather than an afterthought. The task force must combine territorial movement, objective capture, event responses, and a return to base, replacing a battle-only structure with an operation that includes extraction.
What is Congo Merc?
Set during the warfare that followed Congo’s independence in the 1960s, Congo Merc places an elite commando task force under player command.
Operations involve advancing into enemy territory, capturing objectives, and returning to base. Based on a Decision Games board game, it includes missions involving hostage rescue and searches for Cuban cadre. Task forces may include jeep-mounted commandos, light armor, sappers, air support, paratroopers, and other unit types. Forces move across a map covering the country, with events triggered at certain locations. These can include UN intervention or enemy ambushes. Combat uses a quasi-tactical procedure that weighs tactical superiority and firepower.
How Congo Merc plays
- 01Mixed Task Forces
- Assemble forces from jeep units, armored vehicles, engineers, aircraft support, airborne troops, and other unit types.
- 02Location Events
- Reaching certain points on the map can trigger developments such as UN intervention or enemy ambushes.
- 03Return Objectives
- Operations require forces to reach targets and make it back to their home base.
- 04Quasi-Tactical Combat
- Combat resolution uses both tactical superiority and firepower.
