Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking real-time combat may bounce off the turn-based grid battles.
- Players who prefer short, tightly scoped campaigns may find the many areas, quests, items, and customization systems demanding.
- Players who want a realistic tone may not suit the mixture of ancient horrors, monsters, and humor.
- Players uninterested in replaying a completed campaign may not use the New Game Plus additions.
Our take on Caves of Lore
The bounce point arrives when party customization becomes central: players who do not want to compare spells, abilities, traits, equipment, and enchantments may hit a wall before the tactical combat has room to carry the experience.
What is Caves of Lore?
Caves of Lore is a turn-based fantasy CRPG combining environmental exploration, character interaction, and grid-based tactical combat.
Players guide a party of up to six characters through 20+ areas, 30+ quests, and encounters with 50+ monsters and 40+ NPCs. Character customization includes 65+ spells, 65+ abilities, 65+ traits, hundreds of items, and tens of thousands of enchantment combinations. Dialogue, books, hidden secrets, and lore expand the world, which mixes dark themes and ancient horrors with humor. New Game Plus allows a completed game to continue or restart while carrying forward selected stat increases, abilities, spells, traits, and equipped jewelry. It also adds item resonance and the ability to destroy enchantments.

Caves of Lore compared to similar games
Caves of Lore combines exploration, dialogue, party customization, and grid-based turn-based combat, while Shogun Showdown centers on attack tiles, deck building, and repeated roguelike runs. Back to the Dawn is also an RPG, but its described structure focuses on prison survival, investigation, and escape rather than fantasy party management.
