Our take on Cathedral
Rather than guiding progression through a tightly ordered path, the game places exploration at the center of its 2D adventure structure. Its large interconnected map, optional secrets, magical access items, and emphasis on backtracking depart from more linear action games.
What is Cathedral?
Explore a hand-crafted 2D world spanning more than 600 rooms, including hidden areas, towns, dungeons, puzzles, shops, and non-player characters.
A nameless knight accompanied by the spirit Soul searches for five elemental orbs while investigating an unfamiliar world and the character’s lost past. Each orb is protected by a guardian fought in a dedicated dungeon. Magical items open access to additional locations, while a world map marks discoveries and supports backtracking. The single-player adventure uses modern controls with visuals and audio inspired by 8-bit and 16-bit games. Controller play is supported alongside keyboard input, and the world includes varied enemies, distinct areas, secrets, and challenges.
How Cathedral plays
- 01Interconnected world
- More than 600 rooms connect towns, dungeons, secret areas, puzzles, and other locations.
- 02Orb guardian battles
- Five elemental orbs are protected by guardians encountered in their respective dungeons.
- 03Exploration map
- The map records locations, items, and routes that can be revisited.
- 04Progression items
- Magical items provide access to places that were previously unreachable.
- 05Retro audiovisual style
- The presentation draws on NES color and sound capabilities while also taking inspiration from the 16-bit era.
Cathedral compared to similar games
Sundered: Eldritch Edition is also a metroidvania, but its description emphasizes chaotic action, roguelite structure, and a definitive-edition update, while Cathedral centers on a hand-crafted world of more than 600 rooms, puzzles, towns, and five guardian dungeons. Jusant focuses on climbing tools, stamina management, and reaching the top of a tower rather than orb collection and interconnected dungeon exploration.
