Our take on Canvas Quest
The defining detail is combat experimentation: spells and moves can range from ineffective to highly useful, with their value depending on situations and combinations rather than a stated optimal strategy.
What is Canvas Quest?
Canvas Quest is a turn-based JRPG built with RPGMaker MV.
Bob, an ordinary resident of Circle Town, sets out after his wife Suzy is kidnapped by the Evil King. The journey introduces friends, enemies, and a visual style based on rough digital and physical artwork, including stickman characters and prominent circles and lines. Combat centers on experimentation: newly learned spells and moves can be ineffective, situational, useful in combinations, or very strong, with no fixed strategy identified for the player. Encounters include familiar creatures such as slimes and bats alongside unusual enemies, including a mech-equipped slime, a tornado with a face, and a small moon.
How Canvas Quest plays
- 01Turn-Based Combat
- Battles let characters use spells and moves whose value can change by situation or combination.
- 02Experimental Abilities
- Players determine effective tactics because the game does not identify a single best approach.
- 03Unusual Enemy Designs
- Opponents include a slime in mechanical armor, a faced tornado, and a small moon.
- 04Rough Art Style
- The presentation uses stick figures and deliberately prominent circles and straight lines.
Canvas Quest compared to similar games
Canvas Quest uses turn-based battles centered on testing uncertain spells and moves, while Back to the Dawn focuses on surviving and escaping a maximum-security prison through crime-related investigation. Ghost of a Tale is an action RPG with stealth, disguises, and conversations, whereas Canvas Quest follows Bob's rescue journey through unusual encounters.
