Our take on Black Dragon Mage
Instead of centering progression on a fixed campaign, the game builds its structure around repeated runs, procedural maps, and post-death upgrades. The dragon companion also shifts the usual survivors-style setup by adding a mountable ally to the combat loop.
What is Black Dragon Mage?
Black Dragon Mage is a top-down action-roguelite shooter with 16-bit-style visuals, elemental weapons, and dark-fantasy combat.
Each run combines a core arsenal with offensive and defensive abilities selected during level-ups. Weapons can be altered through statistics and Masteries, while deaths open access to new upgrades, weapons, abilities, and other purchases in the Hall of Relics. A dragon companion can be hatched from an egg and ridden into combat. Battles feature large demonic crowds, boss encounters, environmental hazards, traps, and randomly placed power-ups. Procedurally generated maps change the arrangement of environments between runs. Fireballs, freezing orbs, an arcane beam staff, and void-based attacks offer different ways to shape a build and fight through each session.

Black Dragon Mage compared to similar games
Abyssus also combines shooting with roguelite progression, but it focuses on multiplayer action, hand-crafted levels, and brine-powered weapons that can be refitted with ancient technologies. Sundered: Eldritch Edition is a chaotic metroidvania, while Black Dragon Mage uses top-down shooter combat, procedural environments, selectable run builds, and a dragon companion.
