Our take on Atama
Avoidance defines the experience: without combat, progress depends on reading enemy movement and solving puzzles under threat. That focus gives the game a tense investigative structure, but leaves little room for players who expect fighting or broad mechanical variety.
What is Atama?
Investigate Kisaragi, an isolated rural Japanese village, as Kaede searches for her missing Aunt Noriko and the meaning of a family curse.
Atama is a stealth horror game built around observing the world from the perspective of pursuing enemies. Their routes and lines of sight become part of the investigation, while puzzles require reasoning rather than combat because Kaede cannot fight back. The game includes sinister creatures, a story-focused mode with reduced challenge, and a post-game Hardcore Mode that adds extra challenges and permadeath. Developer Commentary is also included. Its narrative draws on Japanese horror influences, including Forbidden Siren and Junji Ito.
How Atama plays
- 01Enemy viewpoint scouting
- Switching perspective to pursuers reveals patrol patterns and helps identify moments to move unseen.
- 02Puzzle investigation
- Progress through the village by solving puzzles while uncovering the family curse.
- 03Hardcore post-game mode
- A later mode adds further challenges and permadeath after the main experience.
- 04Story-focused mode
- A lower-pressure option reduces the emphasis on stealth difficulty while retaining the story.
- 05Developer Commentary
- The game includes commentary from its developers.
