Our take on Asphyxia
The cute anime presentation and poet-themed cast receive prominent attention, while the central narrative concerns worsening depression and a damaged friendship. That contrast may set a lighter expectation than the story's subject matter supports.
What is Asphyxia?
Asphyxia presents a somber yuri visual novel that recasts Romantic poets such as Coleridge, Wordsworth, Byron, and Alexander Pope as anime girls.
Samantha Coleridge has lived with depression for years, and a bitter rupture with her closest friend, Lillian Wordsworth, deepens her distress. During a school excursion to the Lake District, Samantha gets an opportunity to reconnect with Lillian while considering what caused their friendship to fail. The approximately 70,000-word narrative takes 3–6 hours to read, includes branching choices, and offers four possible conclusions. Character illustrations and environmental artwork accompany the story.
