Is ANVIL worth it for you?
We tell you who should skip it, too.
Play it if you…
Good fit- Co-op groups seeking top-down science-fiction shooting
- Roguelike players who want randomized planets and equipment combinations
- Action players interested in repeated boss-focused expeditions
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking a fixed campaign structure may lose interest in randomized planets and repeated expeditions.
- Players who want slow exploration or puzzle-solving may bounce off the combat-centered runs and frequent monster encounters.
- Players looking for a primarily solo experience may not find the multiplayer co-op structure suitable.
Our take on ANVIL
The bounce point arrives when a run ends through mechanical destruction and the game sends the Breaker back into another randomized expedition. Players who prefer permanent mission layouts or uninterrupted campaign progress may hit that reset loop quickly.
What is ANVIL?
ANVIL is a multiplayer co-op, top-down sci-fi roguelike shooter.
Players control Vault Breakers, combat-focused characters who travel through galaxies made of randomly selected planets and face distinctive bosses. Defeating enemies and opening alien Vaults provides relics that increase a Breaker’s combat potential. Sessions use more than 100 randomly generated artifacts and dozens of weapons, allowing different combinations of equipment and playstyles. Breakers gain experience during battles and receive new powers as they grow. When a mechanical body is destroyed, it is rebuilt in ANVIL for another expedition. Breakers have distinct abilities and skills, while the Operator provides information about ANVIL and interacts with the journey without directly fighting.
How ANVIL plays
- 01Randomized Expeditions
- Each galaxy combines randomly generated planets with its own boss encounters.
- 02Artifact Loadouts
- More than 100 generated artifacts can be combined to alter a Breaker’s capabilities.
- 03Weapon Variety
- Dozens of weapons support different equipment combinations between sessions.
- 04Breaker Progression
- Combat experience grants new powers, and destroyed mechanical bodies can be rebuilt for another run.
- 05Operator Companion
- The Operator supplies information and interactions but does not directly participate in combat.
ANVIL compared to similar games
Abyssus also centers on multiplayer shooting and roguelite runs, but it uses hand-crafted levels and brine-powered weapons that can be refitted with ancient technologies. ANVIL instead uses randomized planets, alien Vaults, more than 100 artifacts, and dozens of weapons across its co-op expeditions.
