Play it if you…
Good fit- New Go players who want tutorials and beginner-focused opponents
- Go players who want online ranked matches through OGS
- Players who want to practice against AI opponents at several stated strength levels
Skip it if you…
Saves you a refund- Players seeking an AI that consistently plans well on larger boards, where the game notes strategic weaknesses
- Players wanting stable graphics settings on slower machines, since settings may be reduced to match frame rate
- Players seeking a game outside Go or its territory-and-capture rules
Our take on Ancient Go
The beginner framing sits alongside ranked online play and AI levels reaching 2 dan, but the AI has a stated weakness in broader strategy on larger boards. Its strength labels therefore do not describe consistent performance in every style of play.
What is Ancient Go?
Ancient Go is a Go game with tutorials, AI opponents, ranked online play, and challenges through Steam friends.
Players place stones to claim territory and capture opposing stones. The AI offers beginner-focused play and harder levels, with strengths described from around 22 kyu to 2 dan; on larger boards, it may miss broader strategy while handling tactical play. Online matches use free OGS accounts, with quick matches for common board sizes and custom open games. The game supports AGA, Chinese, and Japanese rules, plus visual hints for atari, ko, and snapbacks that can be switched off. A 3D camera can be adjusted with the mouse. Graphics settings adapt to frame rate and may be reduced on slower machines.
